Modern Switching Architecture
Three things a modern switching architecture has to get right
- Maximum availability: Redundant spine-leaf architectures and sub-second failover secure 99.999% uptime for mission-critical workloads.
- Radical automation: Configuration, compliance, and troubleshooting run through centralized platforms. Manual errors are eliminated by design.
- Scalability without redesign: From 25G access to 400G core capacity expansions happen without tearing down and rebuilding the architecture.
The operational cost when architecture fails to meet these demands
Why traditional three-tier architectures fail to support the dense East-West traffic of containerized environments.
Modern data centers face a fundamental shift in both technical and regulatory requirements. The rapid growth of virtualization and dense container clusters has moved the primary network load to intense East-West server-to-server communication, which legacy multi-generation infrastructures were never designed to handle. At the same time, compliance frameworks like NIS2 and ISO 27001 demand strict network segmentation, auditable access controls, and comprehensive traffic logging. Without a modern fabric design, executing these security mandates on legacy switching layers creates immense architectural complexity and artificial latency loops.
This friction directly impacts daily operations. Engineering teams routinely spend hours on manual port configurations, static VLAN updates, and reactive troubleshooting because unified fabric visibility is completely absent. When an outage occurs or a security anomaly needs to be investigated for compliance reporting, the lack of real-time streaming telemetry turns root-cause analysis into a tedious guessing game across disconnected switch operating systems. Upgrading your core switching architecture is not just a performance adjustment, it is the foundation for an auditable, resilient enterprise network.
Good news: the switching stack is a solved problem
Our Solution
Spine-leaf Architecture: built for today & tomorrow
Organizations that migrate to a modern spine-leaf architecture on Arista and ALE see the operational picture change quickly. Change processes that previously took hours run as versioned pipelines in minutes. Mean time to resolution drops because streaming telemetry and topology-aware alerting surface problems before they become outages. Eliminating broadcast domain problems through EVPN/VXLAN removes a persistent source of unplanned downtime.
Strategically, the architecture opens paths that were previously out of reach: AI and GPU cluster connectivity with low latency, direct cloud on-ramps via DCI interfaces, and consistent zero-trust microsegmentation at the network layer. None of this requires an architectural restart. It builds on the spine-leaf foundation already in place. evoila covers the full stack, from initial datacenter design through to the AI and application layer, with engineers who have built these environments in production across 60+ projects.
Technology that proves itself in production
Arista EOS and CloudVision: network as code
Arista EOS is a single-binary, monolithic operating system running on a standard Linux kernel. All processes (routing, switching, management, telemetry) are isolated from each other and can be updated without a reboot. Full POSIX compatibility allows any standard Linux tool to run directly on the switch. CloudVision Platform (CVP) orchestrates the entire EOS estate: configuration changes are validated in real time via telemetry streaming, RBAC-governed change workflows enforce a four-eyes principle before every production intervention, and the Network Data Lake stores historical telemetry for forensic analysis and capacity planning.
BGP EVPN / VXLAN: the modern datacenter overlay
BGP EVPN with a VXLAN data plane is the industry standard for scalable datacenter overlays and is natively supported by Arista across all platforms. EVPN solves the core problems of classical datacenter networks: MAC and IP addresses are distributed as BGP routes rather than flooded, workload mobility between leaf switches requires no VLAN reconfiguration, and multi-tenancy is achieved through VRF-based segmentation without hardware overlays. Arista supports symmetric IRB for optimal inter-tenant routing and distributed anycast gateways for latency-minimized default-gateway access without centralized bottlenecks. This ist the perfect base for modern VMware by broadcom VCF datacenter designs.
ALE OmniSwitch: converged datacenter fabric
The Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise OmniSwitch series is purpose-built for converged datacenter environments where LAN, WLAN backbone, UC, and storage traffic need to be consolidated onto a shared hardware platform. Integrated fabric mode enables the construction of up to 512 ports in a single logical chassis without external fabric modules. OmniVista 2500 NMS delivers automated compliance reporting, zero-touch provisioning for new switching nodes, and an integrated network map spanning physical and logical topologies, all from a single management interface.

FAQs
Commonly asked questions about Datacenter Switching
Arista is the first choice for pure IP/Ethernet fabrics with the highest requirements for automation, telemetry, and bandwidth, particularly for server and cloud connectivity. ALE OmniSwitch excels where convergence is needed: LAN, storage, UC, and WLAN backbone on a shared platform, often in combination with existing ALE campus environments. In many projects we deliberately combine both vendors by use case for the best result.
Yes, a phased migration is the standard approach. We typically begin with the core layer (spine), integrate new leaf switches in parallel alongside existing access switches, and migrate workload groups step by step. The existing network remains fully productive until the final cutover. Zero-touch provisioning via CloudVision or OmniVista significantly accelerates the onboarding of new devices.
Arista EOS is API-first and natively supports OpenConfig, NETCONF, RESTCONF, gNMI, and Python scripting directly on the device. Integration with Ansible, Terraform, Puppet, or custom CI/CD pipelines is fully documented and battle-tested in production. CloudVision additionally provides a REST API for all management functions that integrates seamlessly into existing ITSM systems such as ServiceNow.
A mid-size project (1 data center, 2 spine, 8-16 leaf, up to 500 server ports) typically runs 10-16 weeks from kick-off to sign-off, including design, delivery, implementation, and documentation. For brownfield environments, add 2-4 weeks for the as-is assessment and baseline design. Zero-touch provisioning reduces the physical rollout time per device to under 30 minutes.
